Is "lifetime" transmission fluid actually real?

Marketing vs. Reality. While manufacturers call it “lifetime,” they define “lifetime” as the warranty period (e.g., 100,000 km). In Calgary’s stop-and-go traffic and extreme cold, fluid degrades. MGI Auto recommends changing it every 60,000 to 100,000 km to prevent premature failure.

Risk is high. Driving with a slipping transmission causes massive friction and heat, which can turn a minor repair (like a low fluid issue) into a total catastrophe requiring a full replacement. It is safer and cheaper to tow the vehicle to the shop immediately.

Sourcing reliability. For major failures, MGI Auto typically installs remanufactured units from certified suppliers rather than rebuilding on a dirty bench. Remanufactured units come with updated internal parts, better warranties, and factory-level testing that ensures higher reliability than a local rebuild.

Labor intensive. Replacing a clutch requires separating the transmission from the engine. On most front-wheel-drive cars, this is a 6 to 8-hour job. For rear-wheel-drive trucks, it may be faster. Plan to leave the vehicle with us for at least one full day.
